The following photos (see below) were taken after a number of us attended the very inspirational church service of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Raleigh on Sunday, August 14. Lynda Shultz, one of our members, and her husband, Howard, of the Learning Consortium of Chapel Hill, were instrumental in organizing our visit as guests of the church. Linda and Howard work closely with the Heritage Foundation in supporting the fine work that this church is doing. Also in attendance was Justice Paul Newby of our North Carolina State Supreme Court. Justice Newby also works closely with the church and its school.
Dr. Patrick Wooden, Sr,. Pastor of this Christian Afro-American church of 2,000 members, is encouraging conservative traditional family values to the members of his congregation. During his sermon, he spoke of many things that we conservatives hold near and dear to our hearts – personal responsibility, strong families, and the danger of becoming dependent on government entitlements. To their young students who were about to go off to college, he warned of the liberal ideologues that teach at our universities. He also spoke of the damaging effects of Hip Hop music that many young people listen to, saying that its wording denigrates their women. He also warned of “Big Government” trying to take the place of God in our country.
This church is worthy of any support that you may be able to give it. They have their own private Christian school for their children which teaches strong conservative values along with high academic standards. Recently, Lynda Shultz wrote to me the following:
Howard and I are working directly with John Amanchukwu, Executive Director of the Upper Room Christian Academy to increase their community profile . The school is a private Christian school, but that barely begins to describe the work that is being done there. They teach a character based education combined with strong academics. Their students out perform their public school counterparts consistently.
The school needs DONATIONS to keep it viable so that it can continue its work to develop personal character while maintaining high academic standards that will lead to productive individuals who will contribute to society and keep this great nation strong! Lynda Schultz
