Thomas Sowell – Economic Fact and Fallacies

Book Suggestion

by Carolina Windy

Conservative Book Clubs are on the rise throughout the nation. And they should all think about reading Thomas Sowell’s eyeopening book, Economic Facts and Fallacies.  One of the most informative conservatives in America today, Sowell’s writing is rock solid and easy to read.  In one small volume, he destroys the undergirding of many of the myths surrounding liberal “solutions”  on topics such as income disparities, the cost of college, and the situation in the inner cities and the developing world.  With easily understandable figures and  riveting explanation, Sowell shows, for example,  that the high price of housing  is not the fault of evil conservatives, but of very selfish left-wingers.

As Sowell says, “[s]ome things are believed because they are demonstrably true. But many things are believed because they are consistent with a widely held vision of the world – and this vision is accepted as a substitute for facts.” We have been fed statistics by a liberal media for decades now. But statistics are easily manipulated for political purposes,  and it is important for citizens to know the true story. In order to change minds and destroy arguments, conservatives need to understand the fallacies which have led proponents of social policies to present their figures in a certain way.

Perfect for busy bookclub members, the book is divided into six stand-alone chapters.

1. Urban Facts and Fallacies
2. Male-Female Facts and Fallacies
3. Academic Facts and Fallacies
4. Income Facts and Fallacies
5. Racial Facts and Fallacies
6. Third World Facts and Fallacies

Anyone who reads just one short chapter will be able to participate in a lively discussion about the myths we base policy on, and come away less in a position to fall prey to the next liberal “answer” to social problems.   Economic Facts and Fallacies is a  must read for anyone wanting to be an informed citizen.
