New documents show that President Biden was checked out of decisions on pardoning felons and commuting the sentences of death-row inmates while his aides worked to make him look involved on paper.
The National Archives and Records Administration handed over Biden administration memos detailing steps taken to create a record that would make Mr. Biden look like the decision-maker for the thousands of pardons signed by autopen during his final days in office.
“Internal emails reveal Biden didn’t review thousands of pardons granted in his final days and even his own White House lawyers were scrambling for proof he approved them,” House Oversight and Government Reform Committee aides posted on social media.
Other newly leaked documents show the National Archives searched its records on the administration’s commutation of nearly every federal death sentence but could “not find a version indicating President Biden’s approval.”
The records were leaked to several news outlets amid a Trump administration probe into Mr. Biden’s historically heavy use of the autopen.
Mike Howell, executive director of the watchdog group Oversight Project, has called on President Trump to take action to reverse some of the pardons and to block the release of felons who received reduced sentences thanks to clemency granted by the Biden autopen.
“We’ve been right all along and do not mind being proven right again. Now is the time for actual accountability. There are death-row inmates with bad commutations who need to be taken care of, in addition to all the other political cronies with legally void pardons,” Mr. Howell told The Washington Times.
The Washington Times reported last month that Mr. Biden’s Associate Deputy Attorney General Bradley Weinsheimer criticized “highly problematic” language used in a single warrant, signed by the autopen, that pardoned hundreds of criminals, including a man who killed a woman and her young child to block her from testifying against him in a drug case.

I am so f**kng sick of watching politicians on both sides of the aisle get rich while they’re in office. But when politicians rail against millionaires and billionaires while quietly joining their ranks, it’s even worse, because it’s hypocrisy dressed up as virtue.
Few examples are as glaring as Rep. Ilhan Omar’s latest financial disclosure.
Just months ago, Omar dismissed rumors about her personal wealth as “ridiculous” and “categorically false,” insisting she was just a working mom with student loan debt.
Now, according to filings reported by the New York Post and Washington Free Beacon, Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, are sitting on a net worth of up to $30 million. That’s a 3,500% jump in a single year.
Either her financial situation changed at the speed of light, or her earlier denials weren’t worth much. And the hypocrisy runs even deeper when it comes to those who spend their careers railing against capitalism, wealth, and inequality. Which is to say nothing of Omar’s critiques of the U.S., calling it “one of the worst countries” in a recent interview.
Her net worth didn’t come from thriftiness on a congressional salary. It came from her husband’s businesses: a California winery and a Washington, D.C.–based venture capital firm, Rose Lake Capital.
The winery was valued at a measly $15,000 to $50,000 last year but is now worth up to $5 million. Normal.
Rose Lake Capital went from essentially worthless to being valued between $5 million and $25 million, while the company boasts of managing a staggering $60 billion in assets.
Not bad for a family that supposedly embodies the struggles of everyday Americans.
And lets just say Omar’s net worth surge was legitimate for a second. She married into wealth — or her husband is just a resounding success — that’s not what bothers me.
What bothers me the most is that Omar has built her career thundering against the wealthy and declaring capitalism a system rigged against the little guy. She lectures about inequality, demonizes people who accumulate fortunes, and paints millionaires as morally compromised. Yet here she is, supposedly reaping the rewards of venture capital and luxury wine—two industries not exactly known for their devotion to socialist ideals.
It’s not that Americans resent success. It’s that Omar’s success makes her rhetoric look like a cheap costume. Don’t preach about tearing down the capitalist system while sipping wine financed by it. Don’t rail against millionaires while marrying one.
The contradiction is laughable. Condemn the rich in speeches, then quietly become one of them. Call the American economic system exploitative, then ride it to a lifestyle most of your constituents will never experience.
As I suggested on X today, people who both hate our country and actively preach socialism and communism in politics should have their net worth capped at $999,000 so they don’t become “evil millionaires,” and they must cut checks for any overages to the IRS or Treasury to help “solve inequity.”
If Omar truly believes wealth is corrosive, exploitative, and immoral, then shouldn’t she model the lifestyle she prescribes for everyone else? At the very least, she owes voters an explanation for how a self-described working mom with student loan debt turned into one of the wealthiest members of Congress almost overnight.

Chinese spies pose strongest threats to university research
Counterintelligence agency urges greater effort to counter Chinese, other foreign agents
Chinese intelligence services are recruiting students, stealing American research and engaging in harassment of dissidents at U.S. universities, says a new report by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center.
Other foreign spies are targeting universities with similar operations, but the Chinese threat is the most significant, the center said in a 40-page report, “Safeguarding Academia: Protecting Fundamental Research, Intellectual Property, Critical Technologies and the U.S. Research Ecosystem.”
“No nation has targeted Western research, science and technology as aggressively as China,” the report said. “The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Chinese intelligence services represent the broadest, most active and persistent espionage threat to the U.S.”
Russia and other foreign adversaries are engaged in technology theft from American schools to advance their programs but do so less aggressively.
Chinese spies also pose the most significant threat to U.S. technology competitiveness by seeking “all manner of critical and enabling U.S. technologies,” the report said.
Specific sectors include electronics, software, communications equipment and other materials aimed at advancing Chinese economic and military goals.
The Chinese Ministry of State Security, the leading civilian intelligence agency, is working to recruit U.S. experts in critical and emerging technology areas, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, quantum technologies, semiconductors, optics, hypersonics and energy systems.
China also is using its forays into academics to exploit research in genetics, medicine and AI to repress vulnerable populations and target specific people, the report said.
One example cited in the report was an unidentified professor at a U.S. university who shared genetic data with Chinese researchers. The Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the national political police agency, used the data to profile and surveil minority Uyghurs in western China.
The State Department has declared Chinese repression of the Uyghurs to be genocide.
“The data was used to build a comprehensive DNA database that enabled the CCP to identify and track Uighur dissidents, sparking widespread criticism from human rights groups,” the report said. “This case underscores the need for researchers, institutions and governments to work together to establish robust safeguards and due diligence practices to prevent the misuse of research and protect against foreign malign influence.”
The root of the threat does not emanate from the Chinese people or Chinese Americans, who are often victimized by China. The main problem is the Chinese government, the CCP and Chinese intelligence services, the report said.
Methods used to obtain U.S. research include foreign talent recruitment programs, state-sponsored espionage, coercion of information from students and faculty, and technical/cyber techniques.

President Trump is slashing $4.9 billion in congressionally approved foreign aid funding through a rarely used budgetary maneuver known as pocket rescissions, an administration official said.
The cuts, which Congress can’t stop, also add tension to the spending debate ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline to approve fiscal 2026 funding and avoid a government shutdown.
Among the funds the White House is pulling back are $3.2 billion in U.S. Agency for International Development development assistance, $322 million from the USAID-State Development Democracy Fund, $521 million in State Department funds to support peacekeeping activities and $445 million in peacekeeping aid.
The official described the funding as “wasteful,” ticking off a flurry of left-leaning programs supported by the funds, such as $24.6 million for “climate resilience” in Honduras, $22 million for a “gender empowerment hub,” and $1.5 million to promote the paintings of Ukrainian women.
The official said there is no way for the administration to “redirect the funds towards fulfilling the president’s agenda.”
Under the pocket rescissions process, a president can eliminate funding lawfully approved by Congress if it comes so late in the fiscal year that it will be next to impossible for Congress to stop it.
The official said that since the rescissions were being sent to Congress past the 45-day deadline, the cuts “will automatically sunset at the end of the fiscal year.”
“These savings will automatically accrue to taxpayers at the end of the year,” the official said.

A puzzling partnership in Philly: The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Philadelphia chapter is led by Ahmet Tekelioglu, a “Turkish-American academic and organizer” who said Israeli “occupation” was to blame for Oct. 7. This week, his group announced it’s partnering with local schools to make them “more inclusive.”
As part of that partnership, CAIR says it will train educators on “cultural competency” and “inclusive practices” and “visit classrooms as guest facilitators to lead student-centered discussions.” While it’s unclear exactly what those discussions will entail, CAIR provides a slew of resources on its “Educational Seminars and Workshops” webpage. One course, “American Jews and Political Power: Myth or Reality,” covers “the key organizations in the American Jewish community,” including AIPAC, and teaches students “about the young Jewish activists who are supporting the BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) campaign against Israel.”
“CAIR-Philadelphia’s announcement comes amid a rise in anti-Israel sentiment in educational materials,” writes the Free Beacon‘s Jessica Schwalb. “The 2025 handbook for the largest teachers’ union, the National Education Association, included plans to promote a version of Holocaust remembrance that does not specifically mention Jews.”

President Trump said Monday that a deal with chipmaker Intel is just the beginning of a push to give the U.S. government a stake in private companies.
Mr. Trump said any profit derived from the Intel stake “goes to the USA.”
“I will make deals like that for our Country all day long. I will also help those companies that make such lucrative deals with the United States,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I love seeing their stock price go up, making the USA RICHER, AND RICHER.”
Mr. Trump is taking an unusual approach to economic governance. He’s making deals that allow Uncle Sam to take an ownership stake in private businesses receiving government support — and the Treasury to pocket some of the profits.
Mr. Trump said Friday that Intel, a massive but struggling chip manufacturer, agreed to give the U.S. government a 10% equity stake in the company in return for the funding promised under President Biden’s 2022 law to bolster America’s semiconductor industry.
Mr. Trump also arranged a “golden share” for the government in U.S. Steel as part of merger talks with a Japanese buyer. The Defense Department also took a stake in MP Materials, which mines for rare earths.
Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House National Economic Council, said Monday that Mr. Trump’s effort is likely to expand to other companies as part of an effort to build a sovereign wealth fund, a mechanism used in countries like Norway, Turkey and Qatar.
The fund would invest the government’s financial assets or surplus revenue and use the proceeds to fund social and infrastructure programs or pay a dividend to American taxpayers.
Mr. Hassett, speaking on CNBC, said the U.S. has no intention of interfering in private sector operations like Intel but will look to expand its portfolio.
“This is a very, very special circumstance because of the massive amount of CHIPS Act spending that was coming in,” Mr. Hassett told “Squawk Box.” “But the president has made it clear all the way back to the campaign, he thinks that in the end, it would be great if the U.S. could start to build up a sovereign wealth fund. So I’m sure that at some point there’ll be more transactions, if not in this industry then other industries.”
The approach is raising eyebrows, with some likening it to socialism or China’s practice of intertwining its central communist government with the private sector.
“If socialism is government owning the means of production, wouldn’t the government owning part of Intel be a step toward socialism? Terrible idea,” Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, wrote on X last week.
Kevin O’Leary, an investor known for his role on the “Shark Tank” television program, told CNBC he hates the Intel stake.
“I abhor this idea, I really do,” he said. “What has made America so great, for 200 years, is the government stays in its lane and the private sector does what it does so successfully.”
Mr. Trump on Monday brushed off the idea that he’s a hypocrite after accusing President Biden and other Democrats of being socialists.
“It’s not a shame, it’s called ’business,’” Mr. Trump said.
He said the arrangement might be new and unusual, but “so are tariffs.”

A top Justice Department official warned the Biden administration that thousands of last-minute pardons signed by autopen were legally flawed and went against President Biden’s intentions by granting clemency to violent offenders who killed children and police officers.
Associate Deputy Attorney General Bradley Weinsheimer criticized “highly problematic” language used in a single warrant, signed by the autopen, that pardoned hundreds of criminals in the final days of the Biden administration, according to a Jan. 18 email reviewed by The Washington Times.
Mr. Weinsheimer, writing to top Biden administration attorneys two days before Mr. Biden left office, said the wording of the pardoned offenses was too vague and could render the commutations ineffective. The lack of specificity could also result in commutations “in circumstances, including for crimes of violence, that was not intended,” he said.
He also noted that the Justice Department was blocked from playing any role in vetting the candidates for clemency. He said the White House granted some pardons despite “voluminous objections” from the victims’ families.
The Justice Department released the Weinsheimer email to the legal watchdog group Oversight Project amid the Trump administration’s investigation of the Biden White House’s heavy use of the autopen. It shows for the first time that top career lawyers at the Justice Department objected to the volume and scope of the last-minute pardons and questioned their legality.
The mechanical signature was used to sign off on three warrants granting clemency to thousands of criminals on behalf of Mr. Biden, 82, who issued more pardons than any other president.
Among those granted clemency were dozens of violent criminals whom the Justice Department deemed “highly problematic.” They included Russell McIntosh, who fatally shot a woman and her 2-year-old child after she threatened to expose his drug business. Others who received commutations were violent gang leaders and people convicted of crimes involving killings, kidnapping and rape.
McIntosh and most of the other violent offenders pardoned by Mr. Biden have been released from prison and now freely walk the streets.

House Republicans are cracking down on efforts by a little-known Chinese scholarship program to infiltrate the U.S. higher education system and potentially steal cutting-edge technologies. Recent revelations underscore the ongoing threat of intellectual property theft – and how major American universities may be playing right into the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
In a four-page letter last month, the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party warned seven top research schools – Dartmouth College, Temple University, the University of California-Davis, the University of California-Irvine, the University of California-Riverside, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Tennessee – to immediately cut ties with the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Committee Chair John Moolenaar (R-MI) specifically warned that CSC plays a vital role in the CCP’s efforts to “develop and acquire key technologies through both legal and illegal means.”
CSC pays for about 65,000 Chinese students to study abroad each year, roughly 240 of whom end up at American universities.
The organization claims to only care about legitimate academic endeavors. However, evidence has emerged showing that the CCP surveils Chinese students who participate in the program. Students must also submit a report every three months to Chinese embassies or consulates detailing “academic progress, laboratory work, research outputs, and publications.” CCP agents are further tasked with monitoring the “ideological and academic progress” of CSC students.
Dr. Xiahou Li Wei, a former high-ranking official in the Chinese security apparatus who defected to the West in the late 1990s, referred to CSC’s operation as “zero risk espionage.” As he explained, the conditions of CSC’s arrangement with American schools were perfectly designed to facilitate the smooth transfer of information.
“No one has to risk smuggling anything through the border. The most critical information is passed through consulates legally,” he said. “The CCP lacks morality and will mercilessly plunder if it has such a wide-open gate.”
